    Cover: Mack's Top 40

It's August, so that means Mack is back with his list of the top hits of the Mets' farm system: Mack's Top 40.

I never knew there was so much to know, and frankly, I've never really followed the minor leagues until I came here, so thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Mack, and Matt, too, and all those who post about the minor leagues here, for raising my level of awareness!

    Great stuff!!!!!

But, I have to ask... Has Carlos Gomez fallen THAT much that he's not even one of our top 40 prospects???

And, I don't know about the rest of you, but I do think Pelfrey has pitched much better his last 5-6 starts, and again, if he had gotten ANY kind of run support, would likely have at least 3-4 wins by now...

I meant to comment on that, ding dong, but to tell you the truth, I've been too busy, and I forgot. I noticed that Pelfrey seemed remarkedly more confident and composed and in control his last start. He didn't fall apart when he gave up a few runs, he was sharper, and looked much improved, in general.

Here are Pelfrey's last 6 starts:

    Vs. Florida - 6 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 3 walks, 3 earned runs - Mets lose 5-2
    Vs. Arizona - 5 1/3 IP, 3 hits, 4 walks, 3 earned runs - Mets lose 3-1
    Vs. Milwaukee - 5 IP, 8 hits, 3 walks, 4 earned runs - Mets lose 12-3
    Vs. Philly - 5 IP, 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 earned runs - Mets lose 5-3
    Vs. Houston - 6 IP, 7 hits, 2 walks, 4 earned runs - Mets lose 4-0
Vs. Washington - 6 IP, 8 hits, 1 walk, 3 earned runs - Mets lose 6-5 (note that ALL 5 Mets runs came after Pelfrey left the game)

So, while none of those would be considered great starts, they're pretty darn acceptable... Now, he clearly needs to get the number of walks down, but in those 6 starts, the Mets have scored a total of 14 runs, which is just 2.33 runs per game, and 5 of those, in his last start, came AFTER he had left the game...

With a bit more run support, he could pretty easily have gotten wins in at least 3-4 of those starts...

Yep, I agree. And I just like the confidence and control he's exhibiting lately. He needs some more seasoning and experience, and continued confidence building, and hopefully he'll be a solid part of the middle of our rotation for years to come.

I thought I mentioned in the opening paragraphs that Gomez came off the list last month because I have him as a Met for 2 months now. Milledge comes off the list next month, and Joe Smith will be back on it if he isn't promoted back to Shea.

I do my list a little different... if you're in Shea, you are not on the prospect list anymore.

Okay, guess somebody may have missed that in editing then, 'cause I don't see an opening paragraph... Just jumps right into Milledge... No biggie, and I kinda figured that's why you had left him off...

    An addition to the list

I'd add Adam Bostick. In his last 13.1 innings over three games he hasn't given up a run, yielded just seven hits, and struck out 17. That's after missing almost a month due to injury.
