    Matt Himelfarb: Omar Confidence Crisis

    Omar Confidence Crisis
    By Matt Himelfarb

To be fair, none of his decisions ever appeared particularly dubious; the confusion surrounding the Schoenweis signing was more of a testament to he fact they could have signed Chad Bradford at the same price than how terrible anyone ever expected Schoenweis to be; Guillermo Mota, despite the steroid scandal, pitched terrificly for the Mets down the stretch.

But they were not just bad moves; they were awful moves.
Omar is making Matt and many of us Met fans nervous about what he will or won't do to improve the team for 2008.

Oh man, i haven't read this article yet but I can almost guarantee it says what I feel.

Omar does make me nervous. he's not a splashy guy (save the 2005 going into 2006 offseason) so we all know he's not afraid to NOT make a move simply to make a move.

My fear is he'll stand pat. And that will have me calling for his head. And you all know how much I love Omar. Can't wait to read!

I have to admit, Omar makes me nervous, as well.

Well, maybe it isn't Omar; maybe it's the Mets' organization in general...lol.

In my eyes, Omar is batting .500. One good offseason, and one stinker. But with Omar, at least we have a chance of not getting screwed, and this is an improvement over that GM turned announcer over at ESPN.

Omar has taken a team that went 294-352 in the 4 years before he got there (.455 winning percentage) and turned them into a team that has gone 268-218 in the three years since he took over (.551 winning percentage)...

He has done this, despite popular belief, without a signicant rise in payroll... The Mets payroll in 2004 was $96.6 million, and was just over $101 million in both 2005 and 2006, before jumping up this year to $115 million... Though, that was STILL less than the $117 million payroll in 2003 that produced a 66-95 team...

He has made the Mets into an NL Powerhouse, despite our late season collapse... Compared to the complete and utter laughingstock that we were back in 2001-2004...

He has made his moves without really sacrificing the future... We still have very good prospects like Milledge, Gomez, Martinez, Pelfrey, Humber, Guerra, etc... He has never panicked and overpaid in terms of trading prospects, as many Mets GM's before him have...

Yes, he has made some moves that turned out bad, but so have every single General Manager EVER...

At this point, I still have faith in Omar that he will lead the Mets to where we want to be... A dominant team for years to come...

As for missing the playoffs this year, just to point out how hard it is to maintain success year after year, please note that in 2007, only ONE of the 8 playoff teams was there in 2006...

That's all true, and all well and good, but let's not forget he also built a team that suffered a historic late season collapse this year, as well.

I think he's made a lot of mistakes in the past year, and I'm just waiting to see what he does this off-season.

There's just something about him that doesn't inspire an overwhelming confidence, at least not in me. In other words, I'm not yet convinced that Omar is God........ lol.

Yes, and I'm looking at the overall 3-year picture, not what happened in the last 2 weeks of this past season...

And, the team he assembled CLEARLY was good enough to win, if the players had done their jobs... If David Wright tags out that runner instead of missing him... If Carlos Beltran doesn't break IN on the game-winning triple hit by Jimmy Rollins... If Jose Reyes didn't go into the worst slump he's had in 3 years... If Tom Glavine doesn't give up a touchdown to the Marlins in the top of the 1st inning... If Jorge Sosa doesn't blow a 3-run lead to the Marlins in the 9th inning... If Billy Wagner's back didn't flare up on him... If we didn't get swept by the fricken' Nationals!!!

I'm not convinced that Omar is God!!! NO GM is!!! Especially now that John Scheurholz is no longer a GM, because he was as close as it got!!!

I have a short list of Gods... Eric Clapton... Joe Nieuwendyk... Stevie Ray Vaughn... Wayne Gretzky... No current General Manager (or manager) in baseball would even come close...

My list of Gods is even shorter -- ONE lol!

I think this team was somewhat flawed from the beginning. It was built too old and too potentially fragile, and unfortunately, both of those things came to full fruition during the season. The starting rotation was a lark at best, and fortunately, actually outperformed what it could reasonably have been expected to, but anyone. The bullpen clearly was where Omar most failed, but I'm not sure how much of it was really his fault. I do blame him for Mota, though, and I said so at the time, that was a terrible signing, for many reasons.

I do agree we need to see what happens over the next year or so before we get a clearer picture of what Omar can or can't do.

Yeah, well, I like being polytheistic!!!

Yes, this team had flaws... But, look around the league and find me a team that didn't have flaws... ALL teams out there had flaws, even the Yankees with their $189 million payroll and the Red Sox with a $143 million payroll...

The Phillies were flawed... BADLY... They had no bullpen most of the year, and were so desperate that they took their best starter and made him a closer... They played well enough to win, but make NO mistake about it, they too were a VERY flawed team...

And, most teams had the same flaw we did, which is lack of bullpen.. Again, just about every team struggled mightily once they had to go to their bullpen...

I agree that the jury is still out on Omar, but I certainly wouldn't say that I have a crisis of confidence in him...

    Perspective, people, perspective.

These are good times to be a Mets fan. The only Shea Opening Day I was able to attend in eight years of having sweet season tickets featured this lineup .......

Tuesday 4/12/77 vs. StL., Game 4
    Mazzilli CF
    Millan 2B
    Milner LF
    Kingman RF
    Kranepool 1B
    Stearns C
    Staiger 3B
    Harrelson SS
    Seaver P
Okay, so they won, 4-0, but there wasn't a lot of running around the bases for this team during this season. Lots and lots of "three-and-out"s are more like it.

Plenty of fans of other teams would trade places with us in a heartbeat, and Omar, The Wilpons, and Willie have to get the credit.
"Moses came ridin' up on a quasar.
His spurs were jingling, his door was ajar,
His buckle was silver, his manner was gold,
I asked him to come on in out of the cold.

His brain was boilin', his reason was spent,
Nothing is borrowed, nothing is lent.
I asked him for mercy he gave me a gun,
Now and again these things just got to be done."
