Mike McGann

Despite an unhealthy youthful obsession with Jim Fregosi, which proved awkward some years later when he was traded for Nolan Ryan, at age 5 I migrated from the sun and fun of late 1960s California to fabulous New Jersey. Naturally, that led to an unhealthy less youthful obsession with the Mets that now has been passed down to my own five-year-old son.

While former pitcher/cultural icon Jim Bouton noted that “you can’t throw your resume on the mound” I think it’s important to do so. I've been writing professionally since 1983 (that's when I got hired as staff for the first time, at age 19, working for N.Y. Post Yankees' beat writer George King at a small twice-weekly paper in New Jersey). I wrote for the Evening News of Paterson, The Hudson Dispatch — covering sports including Major League Baseball, the NBA and auto racing, before deciding I was more interested in writing about politics. While winning various reporting awards, I wrote and edited at various daily and weekly newspapers, including The Herald News, where I was a columnist and assignment editor.

I finally wised up and quit newspapers' lousy pay and lousier hours after 12 years and jumped to magazines in the summer of 1995. I've written professionally about consumer electronics since 1995 for some of the industry’s largest consumer and trade publications: Home Theater, E-Gear, Home Entertainment, HDTV Etc.,TechLiving, DigitalTV, and Dealerscope among others), I was among the first contributors at the legendary, fabulous and much-missed E/Town.com and I’ve written for CNet as well.

After wandering off into the wilds of elective politics and then starting — and selling off my share of Gotham Baseball magazine, I decided to start a series of affinity Web sites, ranging from the tech field, to politics to sports, including this one.

UPDATE, July 2008: I've lost 110 pounds, continue to do Web Design work and am currently at work at no less than three books, none of which have anything to do with sports.
