I wasn't sure I heard this correctly, but David Wright did indeed win a gold glove for 2007? Carlos Beltran won one for center field, but that was pretty much expected. But DAVID WRIGHT?
I am not knocking it, I always thought his defense would come around. I am still not sure he is a gold-glover -- not yet, anyway. I can't tell you how many people have panned his defense, to the point of saying his defense play at the hot corner was downright awful. He still makes too many mindless errors in the ninth inning for my taste, but I never thought his defense was all that bad to begin with.
He has made the highlight reel quite a few times that I recall, like that time he leaped into the stands and made an outstanding catch about three rows in, and managed to hang on to the ball. I believe it was in Seattle last year... I can't remember the game, but I remember the catch.
He also made another amazing bare-handed grab about two years ago over his shoulder behind third base, but then in the same game he threw away an easy grounder. After which, of course, many people camee down on his defense. But I always attributed things like that to youthful exhuberance.
Maybe the gold glove award has become like the Academy Award for the movies. You know, like back in the late 1980s when Cher won for Moonstruck when she really deserved to win for Mask?
I honestly thought if anyone in the infield would win one it would be Jose Reyes, David Wright is strictly known for his hot hitting.
But hey, maybe this is the dawn of a new positive era after that horrific collapse. A shot in the arm to get the team going for 2008. I want to think of it that way, at least!
