Stay back .....I bite!

The Mets traded OF Corey Coles and RP Ryan Meyers to the Chicago Cubs for ex-Met Angel Pagan.

Interesting.

Angel Pagan actually had a great little utility season going in 2007 before hitting the IR with Colitis. He was removed from that list on 11-1-07.

His stats are pretty impressive for a utility player:

Major League Totals - 2 Seasons .255/.306/.415/721

Minor League Totals - 8 Seasons .280/.338/.373/711

Coles has been the Rodney Dangerfield of the Mets organization. All this kid ever did was hit the ball in between infielders and has never been given any chance by anyone to make it in the majors. I got to know Meyers when he was in Savannah. He’s a good kid with a nice arm, but so are 3,458 other right handed relief pitchers in the minors.

Good deal for Omar. Good deal for the Cubs. I talked briefly with the scout that signed Pagan away from the Mets and he said that the Cubs are thrilled with obtaining a contact hitter like Coles, plus a strong, young relief arm in Meyers.

I think you’re seeing a strong commitment to have OF Carlos Gomez spend the entire 2008 season at AAA. He really never should have been called up last year (only due to multiple injuries to other outfielders) and it wouldn’t hurt to break up the Gomez-Jose Reyes relationship for another year and let thinks calm down between Jose and Willie.

I wouldn’t read anything into the trade rumors about Gomez either. No one is trading nothing to the Mets anymore this off-season.

I have a question.

What if a baseball trainer today, who happens to be a devout Christian and would never give bad advise to a young player, sits down with an A-ball player who had a recent injury, and first warns him that he should never even think about taking any of the substances being bantered around these days, but… advises that there is a new drug that has been approved by the AMA, and is being marketed by one of the largest Wall Street traded drug companies, and there has been much success with speeding up the healing process when this drug was administrated properly.

The question… if this drug is added to the banned list in, oh say, 2012, after Congressional leaders who just happen to be running for office throw hearings on their own, and the baseball Lords add this drug to the then 4.586 drugs baseball players can’t eat, snort, shoot up, or pop, should we then castrate both the player and the trainer who did nothing wrong today?

Fernando Martinez – Prospect or Jay Payton?

It was interesting reading what Keith Law said recently about OF Fernando Martinez in a possible Johan Santana trade:

“I wouldn’t deal Martinez for one year of Santana under any circumstances, but thinking that a June draft pick can replace a player who’s already in AA or AAA isn’t quite right… “Even if you get an equivalent prospect, you’ve lost two to three years of time, and in present value terms, that new player is worth less… “The guy to keep is Martinez. Everyone else should be negotiable. I’d give Kevin Mulvey/Aaron Heilman/something for Santana, because I’m not that high on Mulvey and I think Heilman may have peaked…Martinez is a better prospect than either Phillip Hughes or Jason Ellsbury, but is higher-risk because he’s younger and further from the majors.”

First of all, I have never seen Fernando play, not even on TV, video, or by osmosis.

Secondly, as veteran journalist Matt Himelfarb has taught me, go to the stats if you can’t go to the Warner Wolf (you New Yorkers know what I mean)…

Minor League Totals - 2 Seasons: 563 at bats 14 HRs 61 RBIs .272/.332/.419/ 751

Am I missing something here? 14 homers in 563 at bats? Are you sure this isn’t Corey Coles?

Let’s compare these stats to few other minor outfielders in the system:

Brahiam Maldonado: 4 seasons - 775 at bats 18 HRs 110 RBIs .271/.340/.432/772

Jamar Hill - 6 seasons 1888 at bats 68 HRs 274 RBIs .263/.325/.435/760

Angel Pagan - 8 seasons 2483 at bats 18 HRs 217 RBIs .280/.338/.373/ 711

Caleb Stewart - 4 seasons 1162 at bats 48 HRs 190 RBIs .262/.343/.459/ 802

Joe Holden - 3 seasons 926 at bats 18 HRs 93 RBIs .263/.324/.381/705

All right… help me out here.

Just what in the hell is all the hoopla about Fernando Martinez. Stewart outshines him, and frankly, even Corey Coles and Ambiorix Concepcion produces better. Brett Harper kicked his ass.

The Detriot Tigers have confirmed that catcher Vance Wilson has recovered from TJS and should be ready for opening day. I always liked Wilson and thought he would become a great backup catcher in the Bigs. Remember, the Mets traded him for 2B Anderson Hernandez, and so far here’s the MLB stats for the 2:

Vance Wilson: 8 Seasons 953 at bats .250/.302/.377/679

Anderson Hernandez: 3 Seasons 87 at bats .138 .157/.207/364

And lastly, did you notice that 2 of the last players signed by the Mets were named Church and Pagan? If the next one is named Angel….

The Minnesota Star Tribune's Joe Christensen believes the Twins would send Johan Santana to the Mets if New York added Fernando Martinez to its current offer of Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey.

You know me. I follow minor league Mets players, but I still firmly believe that the main purpose for a minor league prospect on a major city team is to use them for trade bait. You can go back to any ‘top 100’ prospect list and you find less than 20 of them ever became a star in baseball. You just don’t know what you have at this point in their development.

That being said, offering your 5 top prospects for a pitcher who could jump to another team in one year would be, in my opinion, insane. It would make a lot more sense if he was under contract for 5 years, but even then, 5 for 1 just ain’t kosher.

It’s my believe that the Twins GM is under a lot of pressure from some of his fellow AL GMs not to trade this guy to either the Yanks or the BoSox. They simply have enough pitching and no one wants Santana pitching for either of these teams, especially Minnesota, who has to come to town and face him when he’s either in pinstripes of the Red Sox uniform.

No, the Mets have the inside track here and I might consider revising the offer to either Gomez or Martinez, Guerra, Humber, and Mulvey.

That should do the trick.

The New Orleans Zephyrs announced that members of the New York Mets, the new major league affiliate of the Zephyrs, will be in town to host a “Meet the Mets” cocktail reception on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 at Pat O’Brien’s on the River from 7PM – 9PM.

Tickets to the event are available to the public, and will be $30 for individual tickets and $100 for a group of four. The ticket price includes food and drinks for all guests, as well as a program of Mets and Zephyrs speakers. Attendees must be at least 21 years of age.

The party will be attended by Mets Bullpen Coach Guy Conti, top prospect Kevin Mulvey, Mets mascot Mr. Met, Mets Director of Minor League Operations Adam Wogan, Zephyrs manager Ken Oberkfell and Zephyrs hitting coach Jack Voigt. Wogan will discuss what the 2008 Zephyrs club might look like.

The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly showing interest in OF Mike Cameron, who will need to sit out the first 25 games of next year after testing positive for a stimulant. Also, the Yankees seem to have an interest in Mike as well.

See, I missed that one. I must have been arguing with Dingo.

Why would Cameron, at this point in his career and surrounded by all the press against this shit, take anything more than sweet-n-low? Are some of these guys this incredibly stupid? They ask you to continually piss in a bottle and you would think they had enough money to at least buy something that is still undetectable.

And they say I’m reckless.

From a Seattle newspaper:

The St. Louis Cardinals named Gary LaRocque a senior special assistant to general manager John Mozeliak Wednesday. LaRocque arrives in the Gateway City after spending the last 10 years in senior management levels for the New York Mets. The 32-year baseball veteran spent 2007 as a professional scout for the Mets. Prior to that, LaRocque served as vice president of professional scouting and vice president of player development and scouting for the Mets. "Gary brings a wealth of experience and diverse background that will benefit our baseball operation greatly," said Mozeliak. "We are excited to have him aboard."

Omar and Co. keeps getting stronger…

The SportingNews.com today ranked the 16 starting rotations in the National League, with the Mets finishing 9th, one behind the Atlanta Braves and one ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. Here's how author Gerry Fraley felt about a starting five of Pedro Martinez, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey:

"Martinez and Hernandez are nearing the end. Maine and Pelfrey are still learning. Perez can be very good or very bad. His frequent walks lull fielders to sleep."

It’s amazing that an analysis that bad still puts the Mets in the middle of the pack… that’s how bad pitching is these days…

Mako Oliveras will return to manage the Binghamton Mets in 2008. Pitching coach Ricky Bones also returns. Luis Natera, will serve as the B-Mets’ hitting coach and trainer Joe Golia and strength coach Clayton Wilson will also re-join Binghamton this season.

It looks like 1B Michel Abreu has finally got his visa paperwork worked out and will return to the Mets organization in 2008. I project him as a back-up/DH at AAA.

It doesn’t look like RP Juan Padilla will be ready on opening day. Look for him to start the 2008 season on the AAA-IR.

P Josh Appell is now the property of the Houston Astros. They also signed OF Victor Diaz and P Mike DeJeans to minor league contracts with invites to spring training.
