Mack Atack: July 2, 2008

By John Mackin Ade
Posted Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Phils: 39 losses - Marlins: 40 – Mets: 42 - Braves: 44 – Nats: 50

A Look Back at the Trades:

11/18/05 –

Acquired INF/OF Xavier Nady from the San Diego Padres:

2006 Mets: .264/.326//.487

7-31-06: Traded to Pittsburgh for: P Roberto Hernandez

2005 Mets: 8-6, 2.58
2006 Mets: 0-0, 3.48

and... SP Oliver Perez

Since becoming a Met: 21-17

In exchange for OF Mike Cameron:

50 HRs, 180 RBIs in 3 seasons since leaving Mets

Conclusion: if Cameron had stayed healthy the past 3 years, I would have been thrilled if the Mets just would have kept him, but alas, he didn’t… this all translated to a Mike Cameron for Oliver Perez deal, and though OP has been inconsistent, the Mets are still the winner on this trade.

A Peak at What The 2009 Rosters Will Look Like:

Judging on performance, and the way the Mets are operating these days, this is how the 2009 rosters could begin to look like in 2009 (I project Nick Evans, Carlos Muniz, Fernando Martinez, and Eddie Kunz being on the Mets):
New Orleans:

1B ***Mike Carp, 2B Emmanuel Garcia, SS Jose Coronado, 3B ***Dan Murphy, C Mike Nickeas, OFs Caleb Stewart, Josh Peterson, SPs Adam Bostick, Jason Vargas, Ambiorix Burgos, Bobby Parnell, Sal Aguilar, RP Eddie Camacho, Eric Brown

B-Mets: 1B Lucas Duda, 2B ***Greg Veloz, SS ***Ruben Tejada, 3B ***Shawn Bowman, C Josh Thole, OFs D.J. Wabick, Ezequiel Carrera, SPs ***Tobi Stoner, ***Dillon Gee, ***Dylan Owen, ***Mike Antonini, RP Emary Frederick, Edgar Ramirez, Steve Cheney

Lucy: 1B ***Ike Davis, 2B Josh Satin, SS ***Wilmer Flores, 3B ***Jefry Marte, SS/C?/2B? ***Reece Havens, OF ***Cesar Puello, SPs Angel Calero,
Scott Moviel, ***Brad Holt, Elvin Ramirez, Brant Rustich, RP Jose Bierd,
Josh Stinson

Gnats: 1B Stefan Walsh, 2B Ignacio Medrano, SS Miquel Tejada, 3B Imbewar Alvarez, SP Nathan Vineyard, RP Travis Babin

There seems the be enough quality minor leaguers currently in Binghamton, that could be sent to New Orleans and break up the old fart direction of the team.

*** markings means prospects, and as you see, the lower levels of the Mets organization are beginning to develop a bunch. The B-Met team could be a killer one in 2009.

Zephyrs:

B-Mets:

It was interesting to see the B-Mets play Nick Evans at 3B Monday night. That was the position Nick was drafted as, and the more positions you can play (LF, 1B, 3B), the more likely you will stick in the majors as a utility player. Good move by the Mets…

Gnats:

Savannah starter Josh Stinson fired six innings of shutout ball and Nick Abel closed the door as the Sand Gnats whitewashed the Charleston RiverDogs, 7-0, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of a season-high 7,019 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the Sand Gnats snap a three-game losing skid – all to the RiverDogs – and improve to 4-9 in the season’s second half and 37-46 overall. Charleston slips to 5-7 since the All-Star break and 50-32 on the season.

Charleston collected only six hits on the night, with Stinson allowing only five in six strong innings. It was the RiverDogs’ first time shutout since Greenville whitewashed them on May 14, a 1-0 victory in Charleston.

Stinson, in improving his record to 2-4, fanned three and walked one while Abel, in securing his first save of the season, went three full frames, allowed one hit and struck out four.

After leading 1-0 after three innings, Savannah erupted for four runs in the fourth on five hits, an error and a wild pitch.

Sean McGraw, Nick Giarraputo and Joaquin Rodriguez collected singles to load the sacks with one out and Carlos Guzman lofted a sac fly to left to plate McCraw.

Leadoff batter Greg Veloz followed with an RBI single that scored Giarraputo, and on the same play Rodriguez scored on Charleston right fielder Austin Krum’s throwing error. Veloz then scored on a wild pitch from RiverDogs starter Lance Pendleton (6-4).

The Sand Gnats added their sixth run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Veloz, his fourth of the season, which came on a 1-0 pitch from reliever Ryan Zink.

The seventh run came in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Guzman, his fourth of the season, which came on a 3-1 count from Nick Chigges, a former College of Charleston standout.

Savannah tallied its first run in the third inning on an RBI single by Juan Lagares.

Savannah recorded 12 hits on the night while Charleston could only muster six. Krum had two of the RiverDogs’ hits.

Clones:

3B Jake Eigsti was sent from Savannah to Brooklyn.

From Rotoworld: 2008 first-round pick Reese Havens made his pro debut on Monday and went 0-for-4 with a walk for short-season Single-A Brooklyn. Havens had been sidelined with a wrist injury since signing with the Mets. He was a DH in his debut, but he's expected to remain a shortstop for the rest of this year. A move to second figures to take place eventually

K-Port:

MiLB.com’s offensive player of the week:

Appalachian League - Wilmer Flores, Kingsport

.429 (12-28), 7 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 0 BB, 5 SO, 1 SB, .786 SLG - The Venezuelan native is leading the league in hits with 22 and has hit safely in 12 of the team's first 13 games, putting together hitting streaks of four and eight games, respectively -- the second of which he's still on. He tripled in a four-hit, three-RBI game on Thursday against Pulaski and drove in four, thanks to a three-run homer, Saturday in a 13-4 victory. His 17 RBIs are one shy of the league leader through 13 games.

GCL Mets

The Mets won, 3-0, vs. the Cards… home runs by Moises Alou (2-3, 2 RBIs) and Jefry Marte (.345)… Jenrry Mejia (2-0) pitched 5 scoreless innings (1 ER/15 IP)

This Day in Mets History:

2000 - At Shea Stadium, Mets' fan Gregory Sweeney is arrested and charged with reckless endangerment after he throws a ball back onto the field which John Rocker had tossed into the stands. In a few day later, the 26-year old Brooklyn man will be exonerated as Queens District Attorney Richard Brown concludes Mr. Sweeney had no criminal intent and was doing nothing more than following a baseball tradition of returning an unsolicited and unwanted souvenir.
