Draft News:

California senior second baseman Josh Satin became the school's first, first-team All-American in baseball since 1992 when he was named to Baseball America's first-team All-America squad Thursday, June 12 by the national publication. Satin, who was selected in the sixth round by the New York Mets on June 5, has also been named an All-American this spring by Rivals.com (second-team) and Collegiate Baseball (third-team).

Rotoworld: 14. Ike Davis – 1B/OF, Mets – 1.18 (18th)

Known for his power coming into his college career, Davis didn't display the type of game power that was expected of him. He hit just 16 homers during his first two seasons, though he did smack 42 doubles. It was later revealed that he was being bothered by a wrist injury that required surgery the summer following his sophomore season. With that cleaned up, Davis returned to action for Arizona State this spring and had his best year yet with a .385 batting average, 16 homers, and 26 doubles. The left-hander also showed solid plate discipline, walking 31 times while striking out on 34 occasions.
Davis has plenty of power is his 6'4", 205-pound frame, and there's more projection there as he continues to get bigger. That Davis hit better on the road than at his hitter-friendly home confines was also a plus, and he's already known for his ability to handle left-handed pitching. However, Davis hit just .305/.406/.441 against opposing team's best pitchers, raising questions about how his game will translate to the more advanced pitchers of he minors.

While Davis has been productive for three years in college, he's still a somewhat risky college pick. The Friday starter splits are certainly worrisome and as is I think he'll struggle to hit above .260, but he also has greater power potential than he's shown and his performance this year suggests I may be underselling his average. Despite my concerns, I like taking a chance on him among the draft's top 15 prospects. Currently a first basemen, Davis has the arm to play right field given that he was ASU's closer. He may end up in left because of his range, but either is better than getting stuck at first.

B-Mets:

For Salvador Aguilar, the difference between last season and this one comes down to three words. "Eliminate the mistakes," Aguilar said. Aguilar continued his stellar season on Thursday with a spectacular outing at NYSEG Stadium. He pitched seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits in the B-Mets' 1-0 victory over the Harrisburg Senators in the final game of a three game Eastern League series. Aguilar, who struck out six, improved to 7-1 with the victory. He's the first B-Mets pitcher to reach seven wins this season, and he's tied for the second-most victories in the Eastern League. He's already equaled his win total from last season. "I feel pretty good out there," Aguilar said. "Last year, I made a lot of mistakes. I left a lot of balls up in the zone and guys made me pay for it. This year, I've been able to eliminate those mistakes." - PressConnects

Clones:

VSL Mets:

The talk of the VSL Mets continues to be starting pitcher Orlando Tovar. The 6-3 20-year old has started 6 games so far in this young season and hasn’t gotten past the 5th inning due to a rigid pitch count, however, don’t be disillusioned with his 0-0 record. His ERA is a league leading (for starters) 0.93, while he has struck out 39 batters in 29.0 innings. Oh, did I tell you he was a lefty?

Minor League Bios:

Robinson Cancel C R R 6-0 195 5-4-76 Lajas, Puerto Rico

Cancel was drafted in the 16th round of the 1994 draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He did make it to the parent team in 1999, but has banged around minor and independent leagues since then for the Brewers, Tampa Bay, and St. Louis.

Cancel played 2006 for Edinburg in one of the Independent Leagues and had 343 at bats, hitting .297/.379..455. He turns 31 in May.

In April 2007, Cancell was transferred from New Orleans to Binghamton (.269/.276/.426 in 54 at bats); however, later on in the same month, he was reassigned to New Orleans (.264/.315/.412 in 182 at bats).

Ex-Mets:

Yorvit Torrealba added 3 hits and 2 RBI for Colorado.

Since his April trip to the Korean minor leagues Jose Lima has brought nothing but May flowers to Gwangju, home of the Kia Tigers. In less ridiculous words — he’s put his team in position to win ballgames. Through four starts in May hitters managed just a .174 batting average against Jose to go along with a 3.98 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He won two of the four starts. June has brought more of the same and he’s turned in two quality starts, surrendering four runs in 12 2/3 innings. - BTF

This Day in Mets History:

1963 - In a 10-3 win over the Reds at Crosley field, Met outfielder Duke Snider hits his 400th career homer off of Bob Purkey.

1965 - At Crosley Field, Jim Maloney no-hits the Mets for ten innings but loses the game, 1-0. The Reds right-hander loses his place in history thanks to an eleventh inning home run hit by New York outfielder Johnny Lewis.

And lastly:

"The only way I going to win a Gold Glove is with a can of spray paint." –Reggie Jackson
