Zephyrs:

Anderson Hernandez collected three hits, including a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh inning, lifting the New Orleans Zephyrs to their third straight win over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday, 4-2. Hernandez, who hit .301 for the Zephyrs last year but has been mired in a season-long slump that left him with a .183 batting average entering today, came through with the big hits for New Orleans. He broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh by sending a Ross Wolf offering over the fence in right field, then delivered an RBI single in the eighth to provide an insurance run. The three hits were a season high for Hernandez, and came as he was hitting just .057 (2-for-35) in day games this year. Former Isotope Valentino Pascucci once again hurt his former club, belting a home run for the third straight game. His shot over the wall in right field to lead off the second inning was his 10th since joining the Zephyrs on April 30.

B-Mets:

I’m sure 1B Mike Carp wasn’t the happiest puppy In the kennel after watching Nick Evans hit 3 doubles in Colorado; however, all he could do Saturday night was go out there and put up the numbers himself. Which he did. Carp went 2-3, including an RBI n the B-Mets win over Reading and raised his BA to .340. Oh, and he’s back at 1B rather than DH.

Lucy

C Sean McCraw, who looked like he had such a bright future after finish the 2007 strongly, continues to go in the wrong direction, going -04 Saturday night and lowering his BA to a miserable .143. The Mets might want to consider trading places with the Gnats Jordan Abruzzo, who has definitely deserved a separation from Francesco Pena.

Roster Changes: Reinstate C - Salvador Paniagua from Temporarily Inactive List - Send OF - Will Vogl to Brooklyn Cyclones Roster

Gnats:

SP Elvin Ramirez (5-3) is begging to step and join Mike Antonini and Angel Calero as 3 premium starters that are beginning to turn around their young season. Ramirez gave up only 1 ER in 6.2 IP Saturday night and lowered his ERA to 3.26 in the Gnats 4-2 victory against Greenville.

Minor Mets Bios:

Will Vogl OF R R 5-9 175 12/10/83

Vogl played for St. John's University after transferring from Skyline Junior College. At St. Johns, his stats were awesome: .382 (which was ranked 65th in the nation), 14 HRs, 64 RBIs, 18 2B, 6 triples. He was named a Third-Team All-American. Vogl was not drafted in 2006 (???), and signed with the Mets as a free agent. In 2006, Vogl played 55 games for Hagerstown, batting .250/.332/.362. He also got in 3 at bats in Brooklyn. In 2007, Vogl played for Brooklyn (.240/.310/.319 in 229 at bats).

Jeffrey Voyles IF R R 5-10 175 11-29-83 Texas-San Antonio

Voyles played 4 full years at Texas-San Antonio, where he went .294/.382/.413 in his senior year. His nickname is ‘Jr’. The Mets drafted him in the 34th round of the 2006 draft, signed him, and shipped him off to the GCL Mets (where he played… you guessed it… 2B). His stats in 160 at bats: .250/.342/.288. He also had 21 at bats for Hagerstown. ‘J.R.’ played the 2007 season for Brooklyn, batting .254/.342/.385 in 169 at bats.

Ex-Mets:

Mike Cameron doubled, homered, and scored twice

SP Steve Trachsel couldn’t get out of the 2nd inning.

Jason Bay had a two-run homer in the fourth and a game-winning single 10 innings later as the Pirates edged the Cubs 5-4 on Saturday.

Lastings Milledge went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer since March 31 against the Brewers on Saturday

And lastly:

Forget Willie. Here’s what Alvin Dark said in 1964:

“We have trouble because we have so many Negro and Spanish-speaking players on the team. They are just not able to perform up to the white ballplayer when it comes to mental alertness . . . You can’t make most Negro and Spanish players have the pride in their team that you can get from white players.”
