Mike Attack: Sept. 6, 2008

Playoffs? Playoffs? Brooklyn? Not so fast. The Cyclones, the Mets’ last, best hope for minor league postseason action were eliminated when they fell to Aberdeen in extra innings while Jamestown swept a doubleheader, leaving the big-league club as the sole hope to make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, back at Big Shea (that should bring back a few memories), the Mets ran into a buzz saw in the name of Brett Myers. It was just one of those nights — it’s not that the Mets played poorly — quite the contrary, actually — just that Myers had freaky stuff and nobody was going to touch him last night.

Losses:

Cubs 56
Brewers 60
Mets 62
Phillies 64
Cardinals 66

The Mets are scheduled to play this afternoon — but don’t hold your breath. Tropical Storm Hannah is dialed in and heading right up the eastern seaboard — rain should be falling at Shea by 11 a.m., with winds picking up in the hours right before the scheduled 3:55 start time. Could be a good day to take in a movie or head to the museum — or spend time with your kids or spousal unit.

Best guess right now: the game will be made up as a 1:10 p.m. start Sunday, annoying those of you all hyped up for the Brett Favre-Chad Pennington duel scheduled for the same time. The night game on ESPN should be played as scheduled.

Okay, more Billy Wagner news: another throwing session and all went well. But no rehab assignment — we’re back to a simulated game sometime Sunday. He might get activated Tuesday, but the Mets will likely play it carefully and wait until Friday.

Editor's note: with this edition, we park the Attack for now, with the completion of the minor league season. I'll be coming back with a weekly notebook in a somewhat different format in the weeks to come.

Clones
The Cyclones lost in extra innings on Friday to Aberdeen 5-3. The loss ends Brooklyn’s hunt for the Playoffs, mathematically eliminating them from post-season contention.

The Cyclones took an early lead, scoring the first three runs of the game. Aberdeen, however, tied the game in the fourth inning, and in the bottom of the 11th inning, the IronBirds took the lead and closed the door on the Cyclones season.

Offensively, Brooklyn collected nine hits in the game. RF Seth Williams led the way, going 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Juan Lagares, Cesar Cordido, Josh Satin and Ike Davis picked up the rest of the hits.

RHP Scott Shaw made his 14th start of the year. Shaw pitched four innings and allowed three runs (two earned). Wendy Rosa, Matias Carrillo, Jeff Kaplan, Yury Santana (2-4) and Roy Merritt all followed Shaw, and combined for seven innings and allowed two runs.

The Cyclones will play their final game of the season on Saturday, September 6th. It will be Fan Appreciation Night. The first 2,500 fans will receive an Edgar Alfonzo T-shirt Jersey presented by Long Island University.
