I stopped over at Historic Grayson Stadium this week to see how things are progressing with the new field. Owner John Simmons (who I tried to reach for this article, but wasn’t available) has put some serious ching into the place, first with his $300,000+ scoreboard last year, and now with a complete new field surface for the 2008 season.
General Manager Brad Dodson said that the field surface will be completed in “about 60 days”, which will allow the workers to concentrate on moving the left field wall back 30 feet (it will be 320”) before opening day. “I’m very excited that Grayson is starting to look like a ball field again”, said Dodson, who has run a very successful operation, even though the 2007 team lost more ball games than the Bad News Bears did in their 1st season.
Equally jubilant is Mike Passanisi, who was promoted from ‘all-around-do-everything-that-is-needed’ guy to Director of Media Relations and Creative Services for the upcoming season. “I’m very excited and look forward to calling my first season as a broadcaster” said Mike, who hails from San Diego State and is still getting used to our humidity and ‘no-see-ums’ that fly here all summer (thus, the name ‘Sand Gnats’). Mike is a great guy and can be reached at mikep@sandgnats.com.
Dodson also advises that talks continue in their attempt to broadcast Sand Gnat games next year on one of the local Savannah radio stations.
