FLUSHING, N.Y. – After a few days of evaluating Shawn Green’s broken right foot, the Mets decided along with the opinion of their doctors to take the safe approach and put him on the 15-day disabled list. The metatarsal bone that Green broke really isn’t considered a big deal at this point, but any kind of hard running at this time may actually displace the bone, which would add to the length of time he could be out. So to be on the safe side, the Mets seem to be making the correct move. His time on the DL will be retroactive to this past Saturday and hopes are that he will be able to start running in the next ten days or so.
At the time of his injury, Green was putting up some nice numbers for the Mets, which came to the surprise of many, since his struggles last year with the Mets that seemed to carry over into this years spring training games. So far this season Shawn Green was hitting .314 with five home runs and 22 RBI.
In his place the Mets called up Ben Johnson from New Orleans the Mets AAA affiliate where he was hitting .282 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 22 games for the Zephyrs.
