FLUSHING, N.Y. – After the dust finally settled down around Metsville, what was left standing in the wake of Rick Down’s firing were two ex-Mets finding themselves standing tall and in the spotlight at Shea stadium.
Howard Johnson was named as the heir apparent to Rick Downs as hitting coach, while Rickey Henderson’s ‘title’ is the Mets new outfield, base running and first base coach.
Johnson, who has already had experience as a hitting coach within the organization seemed to be the logical move to take on those duties with the Mets, just as much as it was for Henderson to be able to school the young kids coming up and sharpen their outfield skills and running abilities on the base paths.
