Mets vs. Pirates

It remains kind of shocking that a team without a functioning bullpen can manage to win six games in a row, yet, the Mets have done exactly that, combining powerful offense and very good starting pitching. Closing out the Pirates behind John Maine would be a perfect way to finish a perfect 7-0 road trip. And maybe Luis Ayala, acquired from the Nats last night, becomes a helpful arm in the bleeding pen.

The win streak continues and maybe, just maybe, the Mets will score a few run for Johan Santana, who should have at least four more wins than he does. Of course, with Billy Wagner now expected to miss more time, the bullpen issue looms larger than ever.

Finally 10 games over .500, the Mets look to extend their win streak to five and weather the Billy Wagner injury, with the closer due back Monday. A big outing by Pedro Martinez would make people feel a lot better about this team making the postseason and doing something meaningful.

So which Mets' team heads to Pittsburgh? The one that crashed and burned and blew a late lead to these very Pirates on Monday or the team that toyed with the Nationals and battered them, vaulting back into sole possession of first place? Fortunately, it looks like these are the final three games of the Billy Wagner injury crisis, so maybe, just maybe, the pen will improve.

First place? Check. A healthy rotation? Check. Offense cooking? Check. Bullpen? Good for two straight nights, thanks to a four-inning save by Brian Stokes. Thanks to a visit to our nation's capital, the bullpen is tanned, rested and a ready...in theory, at least. And rumors still suggest that John Maine might get yanked from the rotation to rescue the battered pen. Oh and Billy Wagner is starting for Binghamton tonight, and is expected to be back in the closer's role by Monday.

Amazing. The bullpen actually managed to function. Of course, it was against a team that had it's offensive heart ripped out at the trade deadline, but hey, why quibble?

Count on the bullpen to keep things thrilling. And by thrilling we mean, thrilling in the sense of being run down by a bus loaded with sumo wrestlers.
