Mets vs. Phillies
Shea Stadium
7:10 p.m.
WPIX-TV, WFAN, MLB.TV
This weekend — Hurricane Hanna not withstanding — could be the season in a nutshell. A sweep would put the Phillies in a deep hole (yes, just like last year — which might be the best argument against it) and set the Mets up for an easy run down the stretch against non-contenders (other than a four-game set at Shea versus the Cubs). With the start of the NFL season, this is one of those glorious sports weekends, when you and your couch can become one.

Gravy. After taking two of three from the Marlins and now the first two from the Brewers, today's matinee is a gravy game. Sure, with the Phillies continuing in hot pursuit, the Mets need Oliver Perez to come up big again, but looking at this road trip, arguably the last "tough" one of the regular season, winning five of eight was a solid goal and the Mets have done that.

Mets vs. Brewers

A quality win yesterday for the Mets, with good late hitting and solid relief work. Coupled with the Phillies loss, the Mets will be no worse than tied with the Phils when they open their three-game set this weekend at Shea. One more win against the Brewers would also give the Mets another two of three series win against tough road opponents.

The news is that he Mets will miss CC Sabathia, who nearly pitched a no-hitter Sunday. The bad news, they do face Ben Sheets. The Mets counter with Johan Santana — a true battle of aces, which should be entertaining.

A bad loss last night...making today's game all the more important.

The Mets need to split the next two — and ideally would sweep, putting the Marlins out of their misery once and for all — an important consideration as they play the Marlins at Shea the final weekend.

The Mets get a day off to regroup — but last night's win, and the heroics of Carlos Delgado and Daniel Murphy were big. The Mets need to make hay against a slumping Marlins team while the Phillies head to Chicago — both to put some distance between themselves and Philadelphia and to bury the Marlins.

Mets vs. Phillies

With their ace on the mound, the Phillies' rotation in sudden disarray after tonight's starter, Kyle Kendrick was forced to warm up last night, the Mets are in nothing short of a must-win situation after blowing a 7-0 lead last night. The echoes of the 2007 collapse got really loud last night and a win would quiet them.

Two big games, two big pitching matchups. And with John Maine now on the DL and likely gone for the year, each win becomes that much more crucial.

Suddenly, it's getting a little rocky again. The bullpen crashed and burned and now the Phillies are right there, thanks to some late-inning heroics. It's just about to turn September and things are getting way too interesting.
