The win streak ends, and there are more questions about John Maine and the health of his right shoulder. Meanwhile, the Phillies show no signs of quit. Buckle up and settle in for what looks to be a great division race.

Not only are the Mets clinging to their 2 1/2 game lead in the NL East, they're just two games behind the Brewers now for the Wild Card, with a big series against the Brewers coming up next weekend. Maybe more shocking: they're 14-4 since Billy Wagner went down with a sore elbow. And right now, the Mets are the only baseball story in New York, something that no one has been able to say since the 1980s.

Santana against Oswalt, the Mets extending their lead to 2 1/2 games over the Phillies and would could be a challenging four-game set before the Mets head to Philly for a pair next week. At least no one can be bored by the 2008 season.

Another intriguing matchup, with former aces Pedro Martinez and Mike Hampton facing each other. Hampton just picked up his first win in about 60 years, while Pedro is starting to see that less is more, finding more success by throwing less hard. With the Phillies continuing to keep pace, each game continues to be crucial and exciting and dare we say it, "meaningful."

Mets vs. Braves

The good news keeps coming. Billy Wagner might be out for the rest of the season. Oddly, though, the Mets keep on winning, finding a way to score five runs last night in the eighth inning against a beaten-down Braves team. Tonight looks to be the toughest matchup of the three-game set...and it remains impossible to know what the pen will do on any given night.

As frustrating a season as the Mets have had, consider the fate of the Atlanta Braves: three starting pitchers gone for the season, with another just now making his first starts of the season. Despite having a positive run differential, finding themselves mired deep in fourth place out of the NL East race. Still, you can expect the Braves to show up and want to keep their old rivals out of the playoffs.

Mets vs. Pirates

It remains kind of shocking that a team without a functioning bullpen can manage to win six games in a row, yet, the Mets have done exactly that, combining powerful offense and very good starting pitching. Closing out the Pirates behind John Maine would be a perfect way to finish a perfect 7-0 road trip. And maybe Luis Ayala, acquired from the Nats last night, becomes a helpful arm in the bleeding pen.

The win streak continues and maybe, just maybe, the Mets will score a few run for Johan Santana, who should have at least four more wins than he does. Of course, with Billy Wagner now expected to miss more time, the bullpen issue looms larger than ever.

Finally 10 games over .500, the Mets look to extend their win streak to five and weather the Billy Wagner injury, with the closer due back Monday. A big outing by Pedro Martinez would make people feel a lot better about this team making the postseason and doing something meaningful.

So which Mets' team heads to Pittsburgh? The one that crashed and burned and blew a late lead to these very Pirates on Monday or the team that toyed with the Nationals and battered them, vaulting back into sole possession of first place? Fortunately, it looks like these are the final three games of the Billy Wagner injury crisis, so maybe, just maybe, the pen will improve.
